Happy New Year 2012 !

Happy New Year, dear friends! :D

Another year has flown by and tomorrow we will begin another year – 2012!

Tonight, my family will have a Roast Turkey dinner with all the trimmings – roast turkey with gravy, mash potatoes, turkey stuffing, brussel sprouts, garlic bread and steamed vegetables.  This year, we have moved our usual Turkey Dinner from Christmas to New Year’s Eve instead, for a change.

Daun Pegaga / Gotu Kola / Asiatica Pennywort – A Miracle Herb You’ve Got To Try – An Elixir Of Youth, For Menopause, A Memory Enhancer, For Good Complexion, Anti-Cancer?, Anti-Candida, A One-Herb Pharmacy, Anti-Viral, etc…

A cup of Daun Pegaga drink made with steeping some leaves with boiling water for 10 minutes and then adding honey

*

Good evening, dear friends :D

I stumbled onto the amazing goodness of the Daun Pegaga herb about 2 months ago and I have been trying this herbal drink out on my family. I am really amazed by what this herb can do and I am so excited to tell you about it until I don’t know where to begin! So, do get your cup of coffee and tea and prepare to be here for a while reading my lengthy post.

Daun pegaga is the local Malay name  for this herb, which is also known as Indian Pennywort or “Pang Dai Woon” in Cantonese (literally meaning “Chipped Big Bowl”). I learned from blog visitor Cina that its scientific name is Centella Asiatica, which is the most potent which is called Gotu Kola in India and Brahmi in Australia. Also known as ‘the Elixir of Life’ or the ‘spiritual herb’. Gotu Kola is one of the most important herbs in Aryuveda’s botanical  medicine chest.

Do visit the Complementary and Alternative Healing University website HERE for more information.

I was first introduced to Daun Pegaga by Master atan (my Feng Shui Master and a healer) whom I had asked for advice earlier this year when my youngest son kept getting sick and had trouble getting well despite being prescribed 3 rounds of antibiotics. It turned out that my son was extremely heaty and about the only herb that could help him was Daun Pegaga, which is known for its very cooling and healing properties.  At that time, I didn’t know where to buy Daun Pegaga.

Daun Pegaga is best described as having kidney-shaped leaves, growing on a single long stalk ranging from a few inches to 10 inches and grows as a runner plant in the soil. So far, I know there are 2 types of Daun Pegaga :-

  • the commercial variety, whereby the leaves are more jagged on the outside (the middle leaf in the photo below). This does look like a “Chipped Big Bowl!
  • the wild variety, where the outer part of the leaves is more rounded and even. In the photo below, the left leaf is a commercially grown wild Daun Pegaga, i.e. lots of fertilisers applied. The one on the right grew in the wild and not on the farm.

**T

Two months ago, I stumbled again onto the Daun Pegaga when I read that a lady in Singapore took this herb for only 2 weeks when her husband commented on her facial complexion which was practically glowing and much improved! Again, my interest on the Daun Pegaga was stirred and I began to do some research in the Internet on it….wow!

The more I read, the more impressed I became with the Daun Pegaga and I knew then I had to go hunt for it to try. I began by visiting my local plant nursery and I almost bought an ornamental plant that looked like the Daun Pegaga, but it wasn’t. This ornamental plant has leaves that were not kidney shaped but were whole circles/rounds instead…but they sure were similar to Daun Pegaga;s. Luckily, the lady boss of the nursery prevented me from buying it when I told her I was looking for the Daun Pegaga and she directed me to the local wet market to buy some from the Malay stalls.

Was I happy to have found Daun Pegaga at the market and I quickly bought 10 large bunches for RM1 (about US 32 cents) each.  :D

My first Daun Pegaga was of the wild variety. The Malay lady boss at the stall told me the wild type is better as a medicinal herb and it is slightly more bitter. Later on, I found some commercial Daun Pegaga, too – its taste is more similar to English flat leaf parsley.

I tried growing some wild variety Daun Pegaga and now have some peeping out below my Bird’s Nest Ferns in my garden :D

If you type in the words “health benefits of Gotu Kola or Daun Pegaga”, you will find a wealth of information on the Internet. Elephants in India eat a lot of Gotu Kola daily – do you remember the saying “An elephant never forgets?” There you go, even elephants know this herb is good for health – in this case : as a memory enhancer.

I read a report somewhere where research of the Daun Pegaga was conducted on some lab rats. After just feeding some rats with Daun Pegaga for 2 days, some tests were done on these rats and compared to the results of those rats that didn’t take the Daun Pegaga. Wow, they found that the rats which was fed the Daun Pegaga did 2 to 60 times better in their memory tests! How’s that as a miracle herb :?:

The main reasons why I am now using  this herb for my family are :-

1) Memory Enhancer

I swear, as I am getting older, my mind is getting more foggy and forgetful. I’m hoping this herb will improve my memory. Also, I have 3 schoolgoing children – this herb will surely come in handy and help them do well in their studies, perhaps?

Some people take Daun Pegaga to aid in their meditation practice.

2) Excellent Facial and Skin Complexion

When I was making the Tateshi Kazu Miracle Vegetable Soup for my family, everybody’s complexion got better and more rosy, except for my eldest son’s!

After drinking Daun Pegaga over a few weeks, his acne actually cleared up 80 % and his old acne scars actually became less inflamed and even healed! I later read that the daun pegaga is good for healing scars and wounds. And of course, my own facial complexion just kept getting better. :D

3) Anti-Viral Properties

Who is not afraid of a recurrence of the H1N1 Flu or the Dengue Fever outbreaks? I am.

Master atan told me first about the Daun Pegaga as an “anti-mosquito herb”. At that time, I was wondering how this herb can be that. Another healer later told me this plant has “anti-viral” properties and when I put two and two together….voila! I now understand that as the H1N1 and Dengue Fever are viral in nature – taking this herb regularly will give us a good immunity against those illnesses. Good, eh :?:

4. “Elixir of Youth” & Anti Aging

Honestly, who doesn’t want to have the “Elixir of Youth”. I read in another research (I forgot the details…need to take more Daun Pegaga first  ) about this herb having the capability to enhance our cells and get them to produce collagen or something like that…hence, resulting in us having a more youthful look and complexion, lesser wrinkles, perhaps?

Actually, the herb contains chemical substances called “triterpenes” that appears to enhance the formation of collagen in bones, cartilages and tissues.

5. Menopause

If you are perimenopausal like me, almost approaching middle age – you will understand the problems faced in many aspects of our life. The daun pegaga helps to alleviate anxiety and depression, relieve fatique by improving energy levels (indeed, after a cup of this, I feel energised shortly), and of course, improving memory and intelligence.

6. A One-Herb Pharmacy

Other than its anti-viral property, the Daun Pegaga has anti-septic and anti-fungal values, too. I noticed that while I was taking the Daun Pegaga drink, I had lesser instances of yeast and fungal infections…a real relief for me.

Other important benefits of the Daun Pegaga are :-

  • good for cognitive functioning (brain/intelligence)
  • good for aiding skin conditions, e.g. rashes, eczema
  • improved blood flow and circulation, hence aiding varicose veins
  • has anti-inflammatory properties – good for aiding conditions like arthritis
  • has cooling effect on the body, good for fever, too

How to take Daun Pegaga or Gotu Kola

A research on the Internet will reveal many methods of taking this herb. I shall only mention those that I had learned over these few months…different people have their own ways.

Master atan’s method

Put 3 leaves of Daun Pegaga into a cup and pour boiling water over. Steep for a few minutes and then drink. Take on a daily basis. Another way is to boil 20 leaves for a few minutes with 7 cups of water. Store in the fridge and drink one cup every day.

Added 20 Dec, 2010 – Master atan said we can eat the leaves raw, too, a few pieces daily for good health maintenance.

My lady healer friend’s method

Boil 10 bunches (1 kilo) of cleaned Daun Pegaga (roots and all) with 15 honey dates with enough water just to cover the herb for 2 hours. Drink 1 cup per person per day. This is enough to last my family of 6 over 2 to 3 days. I usually make my youngest son drink more as he gets heaty so easily.

This is for once every 2 weeks, or twice a month.

A Malay lady boss from the vegetable stall

Blend a few bunches of Daun Pegaga (cleaned roots and all) with some water, add some rock sugar syrup and keep in bottles in the fridge…drink  as a vegetable juice. No boiling is required. This is more potent and faster acting. Taste is not too bad if using the commercial Daun Pegaga…the wild variety will definitely be bitter.

Blended fresh Daun Pegaga with a little rock sugar syrup added. One bunch of leaves and about 400 ml syrup were used.

*

A bunch of Daun Pegaga, washed really clean with a little Homemade Pineapple Enzyme before blending

*

Another Malay stall lady boss’s method

Remove the roots, just use the leafy part and eat fresg as a salad. Recipe ===> mix a bunch of Daun Pegaga (chopped or not), with 1 or 2 chopped tomato and 1 chopped onions. Add salt, sugar and pepper to taste and squeeze some lime juAnoice in. Stir and serve as a salsa. Delicious!

My large pot of Daun Pegaga and Honey Dates ready for boiling

Warning!

As with all herbs and alternative medicines, be careful and exercise caution if you are :-

  • pregnant
  • breastfeeding
  • taking Western medication for chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, etc
  • some sites suggest stopping this herb for 2 weeks after taking it for 6 weeks

There you have it – a really miraculous herb. Hope you can try it out for yourself and your family. This herb has been around for many centuries but I only heard about it this year. It is good that we have such a beneficial herb around and for those of us in the tropic countries that can get this herb  easily, you should test it out. Remember….”Health is Wealth”.

Good Night!

With best wishes,

choesf :D

P.S. Disclaimer – Take this herb at your own risk. I will not be held responsible nor liable if you develop any adverse side effects from taking this herb. Thank you.

Chinese Prescription Formula & Recipe For Homemade Tonic, Herbal Wine For Good Health

A Chinese formula prescribing the type and amount of herbs required to prepare the Chinese Tonic/Herbal Wine

Hi there, dear friends :D

This Chinese prescription for making our own tonic wine was given to me by the same friend that taught me the Miracle Vegetable Soup.

My friend said that while the vegetable soup is consumed to remove toxins and balance back our body’s health, this Chinese tonic or herbal wine is taken to nourish our health. This is a “poh chau” (a nourishing or tonic wine in the Cantonese Chinese dialect) and is more popularly known as the “Mao Zedong Tonic Wine.”

He mentioned this tonic wine was taken regularly by Mao Zedong to maintain his good health until he passed away at 84 years old in 1976. Mao Zedong was the former communist party leader of China.

So, I decided to try this tonic wine on my family and I have prepared some in my big glass jar – it should be ready on 22 October.  I was told this wine is very good for strengthening one’s backbone (“poh yew guat” in Cantonese”) and good health.

I brought the Chinese prescription (Chinese medicinal formula or “yeok fong” in Cantonese) to one of my regular Chinese medical halls (shops) to get the herbs ready for making the tonic wine.  I showed the elderly gentleman boss my print out of this tonic wine formula and told him that a friend has recommended that I make this tonic wine for my family.

Wow, I found out that this prescription has been circulating around for many years already. The boss took one look at my printout (prescription formula) and he went to refer to his dusty, old book that was filled with all types of prescription formulas for various ailments and tonics. He has the same formula as the one I showed him, all neatly handwritten onto one of the yellowed pages in his old book. :D

Here is the “recipe” for homemade Mao Zedong Tonic Wine :-

Various types and amounts of herbs as specified in the Chinese prescription.

Please note that I decided to make a double batch of wine and the herbs shown here are double the portions. I thought since it takes some time to prepare this good stuff and my family is big, I may as well make more.

Following the amount of herbs as per the prescription given above, you will need 2 katis of distilled white wine or 2 bottles of 640 ml Chinese white wine.

In my case of double recipe, I used 4 bottles of wine instead. Don’t throw away the empty wine bottles but keep them to contain the tonic wine when it is ready for harvesting/consumtion.

One kati or 500 gms sugar

Method of preparation :-

1) Place the “inner shavings of cinnamon sticks” at the bottom of a clean glass jar

2) Pour in the rest of the herbs

Oh, I had added a large handful of woflberries (gei ji) as I thought it is very good for nourishing our eyes. However, in hindsight, I thought it was a mistake to do so as the berries had soaked up more of the wine.

3) Pour in the Chinese wine, cover the jar and leave overnight

4) After the herbs have been immersed in the wine for 1 day and 1 night (heheh, this is following exactly the instructions in Chinese speak  ) i.e. 24 hours later, add in the sugar.

5) Seal the jar tightly and leave it in a cool dark place. In my case, I just wrapped the jar with some newspapers and leave it at one cool corner of my kitchen.

6) Wine is ready for consumption after 60 days.

I confirmed with the boss of the medical hall – this wine is not heaty and is safe for consumption from teenagers to elderly people.

To take the tonic wine, just mix 1 small Chinese teacup or 1  ”peck” (or peg? not sure if this is a Chinese or Western term) with 1/4 to 1/2 cup of room temperature boiled water and drink.

Can take it anytime during the day or night, just before sleeping. My friend takes daily the vegetable soup in the morning and  the tonic wine at night. He has extremely good health and has not been sick for many years already. :D

When I go back to this medical shop later, I will ask the boss again in details the health benefits of this Mao Zedong Tonic Wine and will list them here for your info. Also, I will take a photo of the wine in the jar when it is ready and show you.

Meanwhile, I wish you Good Health! :D

With best wishes,

choesf :D

Harvesting, Tasting & Review/Feedback

This was how I wrapped up the glass container – with newspapers and taped at the top – easy disposal later.

The Reveal – Wine is darker upon maturity – this wine is about 4 months old

To drain every drop of goodness – I tilted the bottle over a large strainer onto a pot. Do this when you have scooped as much of the tonic wine into bottles

About 3 1/2 bottles of tonic wine was yielded

Recommended dosage of Mao Zedong Tonic Wine – take a small Chinese tea cup or a Chinese soup spoon full, add a little hot water to mix and drink

My review of the tonic wine

  • Very aromatic in the herbal sense
  • Very strong alcohol content (well, for someone like me who hardly drinks  )
  • Very sweet (I wonder if I could reduce the sugar amount)
  • Due to the overly alcoholic and sweet nature of this wine,  you may want to add more hot water
  • After drinking the wine, I can feel it go through my system very fast – felt a little tipsy and sleepy and it was in the afternoon!
  • I recommend that this wine is taken at night just before bed, because I slept a good 4 hours in the afternoon after drinking this tonic wine and I am not used to afternoon naps!

Cheers! :D

Step 3 of “How To Feng Shui 2010″ – Place SCC To Counter Misfortune Star # 5 In Southwest Of Home

Example of a Activated Salt & Coins Cure (SCC)

Samples of Chinese Coins for Feng Shui

Master atan Activated 6 coins for making SCC

Hi there, dear friends :D

Among all of Master atan’s Feng Shui techniques, I am most fascinated with the powerful Salt & Coin Cure, or more commonly known as the “SCC.” His is unique and different from the other SCCs because his SCCs are activated (programmed) with good energies to enhance its function as a Feng Shui tool to absorb any negative energies arising from :-

  • around the home or office
  • any poison arrows or Sha Qi
  • one’s stress and tension
  • geopathic stress
  • missing corners
  • kitchen in the NW or “Fire at Heaven’s Gate

Depending on which sector of the home the SCC is placed in, the area represented by that sector will be enhanced for more good things to happen. For example, if one places a SCC in the North sector, North being the sector representing one’s Career or Business, then the SCC will help to boost his or her career or business by removing any negative energies, stress or tension from work.

For year 2010, the Misfortune Star # 5 will reside in the SouthWest sector of our home. The SouthWest represents the “woman of the house” (like myself) and the “love and relationship” of the adults at home. So, it is crucial that one places a SCC to counter the negative energies there…especially if your bedroom or main door is in the SouthWest.

To prepare the SCC, you can buy Chinese coins from your local shop and ask for FREE Activation by Moderators at Master atan’s Forum,  or for convenience, you can purchase Master atan Activated SCC 6coins from my Dhealing Webstore.

Below is Master atan’s message regarding Step 3 of “How to Feng Shui 2010″.

Be sure to check in here shortly to learn from Master atan on what we can do to strengthen the woman of the house.

With best wishes,

choesf :D

# 3 ~~~ Salt and coins cure 2010.

I had posted the scc 2010 today – anyone who is interested can take a look – there is no time or date restriction in placing Scc. Can be place starting from today and remember to get it activated after placement. :)

As for how to further Protect and strengthen the woman of the house using this technique – i will post it tomorrow.

Salt and coins cure 2010 – Technique

Salt and coins cure 2010 – Activation

Master atan

SCC for the Woman of the house .

In year 2010 placing,  SCC in SW of the house will Protect and enhance the love and relationship , it also help to Protect and support the woman of the house.

To further strengthen this technique, place SCC in the South West of the Kitchen – it is very potent and good for the woman of the house – it can bring many benefits and good things in 2010 – like money wealth and food will be more healthy.

Good Luck. :vh:

Step 2 of “How To Feng Shui 2010″ – Use Wu Lou To Counter Sickness Star # 2 At the NorthEast Of Your Home

Wu Lou or Natural Calabash

Good evening, dear friends :D

For year 2010, the Sickness Star # 2 will reside in the Northeast sector of our home. It is important to counter the negative energies there, especially if one is sleeping there or the main door is located there. The cure is very easy ===> just place an activated Wu Lou or Natural Calabash.

The Wu Lou is a very traditional and powerful Chinese symbol of good health, longevity, prosperity and an abundance of blessings.  Just place one at the Northeast or you may be a bit “kiasu” like me…heheh, I have one placed at each of my family member’s bedside for health protection.

You can buy your own Wu Lou and ask for free activation at Master atan’s FORUM, or you can order the Wu Lous from my Dhealing webstore - there is a promotion going on now whereby you get one Wu Lou free for each purchase, so it’s two for the price of one. Best is the Wu Lous at my webstore come activated by Master atan himself specially for your use.

Here is Master atan’s message regarding Step 2 of this year Feng Shui guidelines :-

I wish all of your the best of health in 2010! :D

With best wishes,

choesf :D :

# 2 ~~~ Wu Lou Activation – 2010

Year 2010 sickness star #2 is in the North East sector – it is good to place a Wu Lou in this sector , especially if it is a bedroom.

Members who wants to activated their Wu Lou , please go to the below link.

Wu Lou Technique

Wu Lou Activation

Old Wu Lou can be activated if it is not broken or leaking – remove old salt in the Wu Lou and place the Wu Lou under running pipe water for 30 seconds and dry with tissue – place it in the sunlight for 10 minutes – then add salt to Wu lou, place it and ask for reactivation for 2010.

Tateishi Kazu’s Miracle Vegetable Soup For Health & Brown Rice Tea – Alternative Health Therapy For Treating High Blood Pressure, Diabetes & Other Illnesses; For Skin Rejuvenation, Slowing Aging Process ….

Note – The comments section in this post is closed for some reason.

Discussion is continued further HERE.

Ingredients for  Miracle Vegetable Soup

Clockwise from top – Carrots, Fresh Shitake Mushrooms, White Radish or Daikon WITH Leaves, Burdock Root (Gobo, or Ngau Pong in Cantonese)

Disclaimer – Please read HERE & HERE, before you proceed with this soup. This soup is only an alternative health remedy. Please read the COMMENTs below for the health benefits experienced by those who have tried the vegetable soup for themselves.

Good morning, dear friends :D

My husband was just diagnosed with diabetes (his mom was a diabetic) and put on medication by his doctor. However, the diabetes medication made him hungry all the time – if he keeps on eating to satisfy his hunger, then he puts on a lot of weight; but if he doesn’t eat, then he goes hypoglaemic and gets lightheaded.

On top of that, he is on medication for high blood pressure, too. Both medicines are to  be taken for the rest of his life – not very happy news for my husband, who unfortunately leads a very sedentary lifestyle (no exercise at all  ) and who loves his carbs (hot steamed rice with tau yew bak, Hokkien Mee, etc).

Last weekend, I met a friend whom I have not seen for a few years and when I told him about my husband’s health condition, he told me there is a soup remedy that can regularise a person’s blood pressure as well as his diabetes. His wife makes this for his family to drink everyday.

Most importantly, he described to me his friends’ experiences whereby one successfully got off his high blood pressure medication (after his doctor confirmed his blood pressure is back to normal), and an elderly lady who was weak in her legs, regained her strength and could walk normally without any aid. Another lady used to run out of breath just crossing the road and after 3 days of drinking this soup, she even got her neighbour to take a brisk walk with her around the park. :D

Wow, was I impressed    – this soup really has miraculous health benefits. Apparently, the recipe and information of this soup has been circulating in Taiwan and Malaysia for many years, in Chinese magazines and newspapers. I couldn’t read any Chinese and so I didn’t come across this wonderful soup. My friend told me this soup is known in Cantonese as “Ng Sik Tong”  (5 Colour Soup), and gave me the recipe for it. I was fascinated and wanted more information. Very fortunately, a search over the Internet came up with “Takeshi Kazu’s Life Extension Soup with Brown Rice Tea.” :D

I quickly went to the market on Sunday, bought all the necessary vegetables and brown rice and prepared the soup and tea for my family.

Today is the fourth day that my family is drinking the soup and tea and I’m glad to say that we are seeing some good results already. I will post my family’s day-to-day experience in the COMMENT BOX below.

The vegetable soup and brown rice tea are so easy to make, and they don’t cost much…it is worth trying it for the sake of good health. It is better than taking hundreds of dollars worth of vitamins and supplements…..the soup and tea only cost a fraction, certainly very affordable and  best is, it can  treat a whole lot of ailments for the entire family! :D

There is a wealth of  information on this incredible soup legend below (resources from a translation of his article in Taiwan and from HERE) :-

What the Miracle Vegetable Soup may do -

  • Heal Cancer
  • Restore injured joints and bone structure
  • Slow down the aging process
  • Rejuvenate the skin
  • Heal Cataracts
  • Heal liver disorders
  • Lower high blood pressure
  • Improve heart conditions
  • Reduce brain tumors and other head-injury problems
  • Reduce high white blood cell counts
  • Improve T-cell function

How did this soup come about :?:

Tateshi Kazu based his soup on the principles of Five Elements theory, the harmonizing balance of the forces of yin and yang, acid and alkaline, that engenders health as opposed to the imbalance, which leads to disease.

The five elements in our environment are wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Because of the balance of the five elements, the earth is able to produce life.

Each essence possesses its own color: green, red, yellow, white and black. These relate to the corresponding internal organs: heart, liver, spleen, lung and kidneys. He used the concept of the five different colors as matched to specific vegetables.

  • Green = Daikon Radish Leaves
  • Red = Carrot
  • Yellow = Burdock Root
  • White = Daikon Radish
  • Black = Shittake Mushrooms

What is so special about the soup is its composition of ingredients – vegetables that are so commonplace, simply what we usually have on our dining table, and they are so very affordable. For whatever physical disorder and symptoms, what it takes is just another cup of ordinary “vegetable soup” a day.

Vegetable Soup Recipe

Ingredients (for 2 days’ quantity)

  • 16 ounces or 450 gm white radish/ daikon
  • 8 to 10 ounces or 225 to 380 gm white daikon greens
  • 8 to 10 ounces or 225 to 280 gm carrots
  • 8 ounces or 225 gm fresh burdock root (also known as  Gobo in Japanese, Uang in Korean, Ngau Pong or Niu Pang in Chinese) [if using dried burdock root, use only 2 ounces or 1/4 of fresh amount required]
  • 3-5 fresh shitake mushrooms (sundried) – if not sundried, expose dried mushrooms to sun again. This is to convert the good stuff into Vitamin D in the mushrooms (refer to information on mushrooms below)

Directions:

1. Don’t peel anything! Don’t add any seasoning!

2. Fill a pot with three times the quantity of water as the vegetable.

3. When it comes to a boil, reduce the flame and simmer for two hours.

4. Strain and drink.

5. Store in refrigerator immediately when cool to avoid losing any of the soup’s goodness. Be sure to store in stainless steel pots or glass containers as the soup may react with other materials (especially aluminium)

Below is my pot of Miracle Vegetable Soup:-

Some possible “getting-well” temporary reactions

After taking it for a few days, this soup prepared from only five kinds of vegetables will have different effects on individuals, but these reactions are much milder than actual physical disorders and are only temporary.

The formula is basically working on our different internal mal-functions and toxins, some we may not even be aware of, and those with more problems will have more instant and longer reactions on the particular problem areas.

These will be normal detoxification effects like itchy skin or eczema and increased frequency of bowel movements, etc. Varying with different toxins in different individuals, the following conditions may be felt.

  • More instant and intense reactions for those with more problems Reactions less noticeable and in stages for the less focused
  • Seemingly no reactions for those who are in better health and with better adaptability
  • More vigorous reactions for the weak and feeble

Whatever the reactions, it is recommended to continue normal consumption, and the reactions will ease out in a short period of time.

The health of modern man is under constant threat of air and water pollutions, chemical additives and preservatives in food and agricultural products and all kinds of environment toxins. Our body becomes more acidic, and the very precious inborn immune system is declining. To avoid developing chronic diseases and cancer, our body need to be properly cleansed and maintained.

“Getting-well reactions” are normal detoxification effects in accelerating body cell activities, enhancing metabolism and strengthening of the immune system, building up stronger body resistance. When these effects are felt, our detoxification system is awakened and activated; this shows the progress of healing, and the more vigorous they are, the more toxic our body is that need proper care and management.

Nutritional value of the five vegetables

Radish

Radish is very rich in vitamin C, ten times more than that in pears and apples. It also has plenty of digestive enzymes, particularly of starchy foods, that help mend the stomach membrane, improve the secretion of digestive liquids and promotes energy circulation, preventing gastritis, ulcer in the stomach and excess of hydrochloric acid in gastric juice. It also has anti-cancer properties INDD that checks the growth of cancer cells and dissolves ammonium nitrate that is cancer causing.

Radish leaves

The abundance of nutrients found in radish leaves is amazing. It has three times as much Vitamin A as that in livers and eels, 60% more of Vitamin B1 than that in fermented soybeans, two times as much Vitamin B2 as that in cow’s milk. It is extremely rich in iron and is an ideal food for nourishing blood. Radish leaves are the richest in Vitamin C, two and a half times as that in tangerines, four times as that in spinach, so discarding the leaves when eating the radish is really a waste. Radish leaves have a slightly pungent but pleasant and smooth taste. It is a very nutritious green-leaf vegetable that maintains a balance with the properties of the other part of the same plant: the edible part of the radish root. The special quality of the radish root and its leaves is another wonder and mystery of nature

Carrot

Carrot is rich in Beta Carotene, a very strong antioxidant, and other minerals that are easily absorbed by the human body. The body changes Beta Carotene into Vitamin A, which is important in strengthening the immune system and promoting healthy cell growth. It is also rich in lignin and INDD that help fight cancer and boost up two to three times the human immunity.

Mushroom

Mushrooms are rich in dietary fibres, and minerals like potassium, iron, etc. It is high in B vitamins and ergosterol that will be converted to Vitamin D in the presence of sunlight, which is essential for utilization of calcium. Mushroom has a polysaccharide compound called lentinan which helps produce T-cells to destroy bacteria and viruses and has anti-cancer, anti-tumor effects, strengthening the immune system and fighting disease-causing organisms. Zinc and selenium in mushrooms also activate thymus in the chest that helps in T-cell production. Amino acids in mushrooms arealso effective for liver diseases.

Burdock

Dietary fibre in burdock is the richest among all root vegetables, which is best for prevention of diseases of the large intestine. It is also rich in minerals like potassium, magnesium, phosphorous, iron, calcium, etc. There is equal proportion of soluble and insoluble fibres that stimulate lactic acids, improve constipation and the discharge of cholesterols. It also enhances blood circulation, relieves internal wind and heat, clearing the lung and diminishing eczema, edema and body toxins, preventing cancer and arteriosclerosis. Its iron content makes it a good food supplement for ladies for skin-care purposes.

Brown Rice Tea Recipe

Another remedy that can be used in conjunction with the vegetable soup is brown rice tea. It is a good diuretic for ridding excess water from the body.

For diabetics, it can bring the sugar level down by producing more natural insulin in the body. It cleanses the blood and blood vessel.

A person with a heart condition drinking both soups in 20 days will be able to regulate their problem by drinking three cups per day. up

For a regular cancer patient, about two cups.

Ingredients :

1 cup (250 cc or ml size) or 300 gms or 10 ounces brown rice

16 cups or 4 litres or 4 quarts water

Note: only cook in stainless steel or glass. Do not mix with any other ingredients. Don’t be “creative.”

Untoasted, unwashed, raw brown rice

Brown Rice that has been dry roasted in my wok to a dark brown colour

(the white specks are white rice that came with the brown rice)

Directions:

1. Roast the rice without oil until dark brown but don’t burn.

2. Boil 8 cups of water and pour roasted rice into water.

3. Turn off flame, cover and let sit five minutes.

4. Strain out rice and reserve liquid.

5. Boil 8 more cups of water.

7. Cover, lower flame and simmer five minutes.

8. Strain rice out.

9. Mix the two rice waters together. Drink when cool.

Brown Rice Tea in my stainless steel pot, ready for drinking

Special Notes:

  • The amount one needs depends on the condition. The more serious the condition, the more tea.
  • Do not drink tea while taking a high protein substance.
  • Don’t drink the vegetable soup and brown rice tea together. Wait at least 15 minutes apart.
  • If you use this remedy regularly you will never be sick.

Some possible reactions:

  • itchy skin or eczema
  • If you use medications and/or have eczema, use less because of possible stronger reaction
  • People with head injury problems may develop headaches but don’t worry.
  • People with eye problems may get temporary blurred vision or itching around eyes. Eyesight will get better. If you wear prescription glasses, try to reduce the prescription and use glasses less frequently.
  • Lowering of body temperature, but this is normal.

*** Notes: For high blood pressure, drink the two soups alternately but slowly. Blood pressure will come down after one month. Talk to a doctor about reducing medication, but don’t stop medication right away. Use remedy for minimum of one month.

*** Notes: If you are on medication, do consult with a doctor to adjust your dosage. This remedy works for some people. It may not work for you. It is not intended to replace the traditional treatments.

I’m also keeping my fingers crossed that my husband will have his blood pressure and glucose/sugar level restored to normality so that he can get off his medication. Because he is working and he is taking Western medication, I can only give him one cup (250 ml) each of soup and tea (he’s supposed to take up to 3 cups each per day) on weekdays and so, his healing rate will be later than the one month mentioned.

Another word of caution – take the soup and tea separately (with half to one hour apart), and take them one hour after consuming Chinese medicine and two hours after Western medicine. This is to prevent contraindications.

Good Luck! With best wishes for good health,

choesf :D

Nourishing Soups To Relieve Menstruation Cramps, Ensure Period Regularity, Nourish Blood & Smoothen The Cycle

A bowl of nourishing Dong Quai soup with hard boiled egg

*

A Chinese prescription of herbs for women’s reproductive system health, especially for treating menstruation symptoms and nourish blood

Clockwise from Top :-

Black Dates, Red Dates, Sliced Dong Quai, Wolfberries

Centre :- Whole Dong Quai (Angelica Root)

Hi there, dear friends :D

This post is in response to some queries from a blog visitor, Stephanie, who had asked if I have any soup recipes for relieving menstrual cramps, countering fatigue during menstruation, to replenish or nourish blood after the menses, and to relieve arthritic pains in winter months .

Although the menstruation is a monthly affair that most of us have gotten used to with a little sense of irritability at the inconvenience of it all, there are some ladies who dread the coming of their next menses – they experience painful lower abdominal cramps (a friend of mine would bend over, holding her abdomen, suffering from the cramps on the first day of her period). Some feel very tired, to which no amount of rest or sleep seems to help.

For Chinese families here in Malaysia, once a girl reaches puberty and begins the onset of her menses, the mother would start the practice of brewing the Chinese herb, Dong Quai (Angelica Root), monthly for her to drink. This is to ensure that as the girl grows up, her menstruation will be as problem free as possible, with regularity of timing and her blood is nourished as it is purged out through the menses.

The timing of having the Dong Quai herbal soup is very important ===> it must be consumed on the day that the menses has completely stop flowing. Preferably just before bedtime.

Because Dong Quai is a heaty herb, the effects of its heatiness will not be felt because when we are menstruating, we are in the “heaty immunity”mode.  Just like during the confinement month for new mothers (within one month after childbirth in the Chinese culture), they can consume lots of heaty foods containing ginger, wine, sesame oil, etc, daily for one month without getting sore throats, headaches, gum pains, which are the signs of heatiness.

Secondly, the most goodness from this “women’s herbal soup” (Dong Quai) is reaped when we consume it on the last day of our menstruation.

Dong Quai is most famously known as a herb which is good for women’s health because it can :D   :-

1) nourish blood

2) improve blood circulation

3) reduce menstruation cramp

4) improves regularity or timing of menstruation

5) help “smoothen” the menstruation cycle, making it as comfortable as possible for women to go through the experience

6) ease some perimenopausal symptoms

In my family, I have 2 daughters and so, I usually remind them to tell me when their menses will finish so that I can prepare the Dong Quai soup for them.

Luckily for us, we love the taste and aroma of Dong Quai and so, we look forward to having this soup. Heheh, whenever I make this soup, I will tell my husband and sons on that day that we are having “Women’s Soup” and they can’t have it. Anyway, they can’t stand the smell of Dong Quai!

Dong Quai has a strong, aromatic, bitter smell…a bit like ginseng, but stronger. But when we cook/boil Dong Quai with Black Dates, Red Dates and Wolfberries, its flavour is mellowed out and soup tastes so sweet and good. If we add in some lean chicken or pork, it tastes absolutely delicious (to me and my girls anyway)!

Here is the recipe for Dong Quai Soup (per person) -

Ingredients :-

Dong Guai, sliced into pieces – 1 tahil or 40 gms or 1.4 ounce

8 Black Dates

10 Red Dates

1 heaping tbsp Wolfberries

Water (refer to method for amount required)

*** Optional – Some Lean Meat (can be chicken, or pork) or Hard Boiled Eggs

Dong Quai soup simmering gently in my crockpot – there are some hard boiled eggs in there, too

Method :-

1) Cut around both black and red dates to remove the seeds

2) Arrange all the herbs (and meat, if there is any) into a pot

3) To add water, decide  on method below of cooking the Dong Quai soup to get water amount and duration of cooking  time :-

*** Boiling pot over direct fire/heat on stove - put in 3 rice bowls of water (about 250 ml or 1 liquid cup in one rice bowl), bring ingredients to a boil, lower heat to medium fire and simmer until there is 1 rice bowl of water/soup remaining. This takes around 40  minutes to 1 hour depending on your fire. Be sure to keep an eye it to prevent drying up or burning.  Remove from heat and serve immediately.

*** Cook soup in crockpot or slow cooker - put in 2 rice bowls of water and rest of ingredients and bring to a boil. Thereafter, let simmer for about 5 hours. Remove and serve immediately

*** Cook soup in a double boiler or steam the soup pot in a wok or larger pot on the stove - put in 2 rice bowls of water and rest of ingredients and steam for 3 hours.

The purpose of cooking the soup so long is to ensure that all the tastes and goodness of the herbs are totally infused into the soup.

Just drink the soup only and if there is meat, the meat can be eaten with the soup, too. Yummy! :D

When I have poured the soup out into bowls for my girls and I to drink, I even reboil the herbs again with a little water for about 20  minutes to get a second round of soup, for all that Dong Quai goodness.

Black and Red Dates harmonise the harsh effects of Dong Quai. They imparts a wonderful sweet taste, too.  They help to tonify the spleen, improves the stomach and have nourishing qi/chi/energies on the body

Wolfberries also have a sweet taste and are added for healthy eyes – a good ingredient to add as these days, we are straining our eyes more using the computer.

For those of you living in the West and you can go to a Chinatown nearby, you can easily find Dong Quai herbs there.

If you can’t buy Dong Quai herbs, I have seen some online store selling Dong Quai powder in capsule form. However, I don’t know how those are to be taken and how effective they are and so, I can’t advise you on that. However, if you are suffering from bad menstruation symptoms, I guess taking Dong Quai powder capsules is better than not taking any form of Dong Quai at all.

The picture below is another typical Chinese prescription for women’s health called “Ba Zhen”….however, I don’t know what some of the ingredients are called as the herbs come prepacked for sale at the Chinese Medical Halls (shops) and one packet of Ba Zhen is for one person’s consumption.

For Ba Zhen, we just boil the herbs in 3 rice bowls of water until 1 bowl of soup is left. Drink the soup whilst it is still warm. Hard boiled eggs or lean meat can be added when cooking this soup.

For those of you trying these herbal soups for the first time, I hope you like their taste! It takes a while to get used to….but if you are experiencing painful menstruation, these soups are just for you.

With best wishes for good women’s health,

choesf :D

P.S. The next time I cook some Dong Quai soup, I will post a photo of it here

Important Notes :-

1) If you are taking any Western medicine, it is best to wait 2 to 3 hours before you drink the Dong Quai soup, to prevent any contra-indications between them

2) If you are experiencing severe menstruation symptoms, it may take a few months before you notice any improvement, as this soup is only taken once a month and it works gently on you

3) Even if you are not experiencing any menstruation problems, this soup is good to have monthly to maintain good health
