When the going gets tough……get yourself going! :D

In my occupation as a homemaker, I am often called upon to multi-task and wear many hats. One moment I am the housekeeper, another moment I can be the driver/chauffeur. Next, I am the gardener, not to mention mother and wife, and of course, at times I can get very overwhelmed by it all.

I remember reading an article in the newspapers a couple of years ago about a research done in America as to how much in equivalent a housewife would make in a year since she performs so many tasks. Guess what was her annual income? Using a pro-rated salary based on the respective jobs that a housewife has to undertake, the researchers came up to a whopping US$150,000 per year! 😯

Wow, in Malaysian currency, this comes to more than RM500,000, which is a huge amount according to our standard of living here. You could buy a double storey house with 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms in the city here! Two houses if you are living in the smaller towns! Anyway, I am digressing…….hehe πŸ˜†

So, my days are pretty full and if something were to crop up suddenly to take me away from my usual daily tasks, I will face a a big backlog in chores. This was what happened to me when I was away for the morning, visiting the Income Tax Department with my husband to sort some things out with them. Naturally, by the time we got home in the afternoon, all my chores were waiting for me. Coupled with the fact that I have not been feeling well due to a virulent form of flu and cough which has caused my energy levels to be down, the outlook for the rest of the day was depressing. 😦

Faced with this situation, I was under a lot of pressure because there was no way that I can postpone my chores and take the lazy way out, because there were some things that still had to be done – like driving my kids to and from school, throwing the garbage out, doing the laundry, etc. Postponing the inevitable would only cause a double load of chores for me to do tomorrow….a double whammy!!

So, when the going gets tough like this, I will adopt a few strategies to get going and finish all my chores and feeling good at the end of it. Here are some of the methods that I use :-

Have a cup of tea or coffee first :D

Between the two beverages, I prefer a cup of tea but you can have coffee if you like. This is to give me a little boost of energy and set my brain in the right mood to jumpstart myself into facing the tough situation. I will make a cup of tea, have a few hot sips, calm my mind, enjoy a short rest like 10 minutes, and wait for the caffeine to kick in! Also, this is the “getting set” part of the “Get Set, Ready, Go!” that you wait for when you are standing at the starting line about to race in a running competition! πŸ˜†

Light an Incense Stick or use Aromatherapy

Then I would like a stick of incense to lift my mood…..I have sandalwood, which is my favourite as sandalwood smoke is believed to neutralise negative energies in a home. I also have “green apple” scented incense and this is good to wake our senses up. Don’t be surprised…scents can uplift our mood and this is a very powerful tool.

Open all windows and doors, if possible (due to security reasons, I have grilles over mine)

This is to light up your home and bring in a wave of fresh air as much as possible. You can turn on the lights also. By doing this, I am trying to lift up the “mood” or atmosphere in my home. Anyway, fresh air will take over the stale air. I also take this opportunity to open the doors in my storerooms just to refresh the stagnant air there. Also, the scents from the incense will waft into the storerooms, thus leaving a nice, pleasant smell there.

{{{Shake your Booty}}}

If you are around my age, you would remember the song, “Shake Your Booty” by KC and the Sunshine Band πŸ˜€ Ah, this is my favourite one – turn on your favourite music! Play your favourite songs! When you listen to them for a while, your heart will sing along and your will shake your booty…..errr….butt… to the tune of the music! πŸ˜† I love my retro songs as they bring back happy memories to me. Now, when you are happy, you can conquer any mountain! Music makes your boring chores fun and enjoyable! Playing some romantic songs is even better, for when you feel the love in your heart, then the love in you is going to get you moving with your work because then, you are reminded that you are doing it out of love for your family! πŸ˜€ Love is a great motivation for any of us. We would do anything (short of killing and stealing) for love, ey? πŸ˜†

Chewable Bits

If I look at the big or macro picture of my day’s work to be done, I will be facing a mountain of seemingly endless chores to be done. But wait! Don’t drive yourself crazy thinking that way! Divide that macro picture in chewable bits……that is, divide your tasks in smaller ones, ones that you can perform quickly and tick them off as finished and you get little senses of achievement to motivate you along the way. I don’t say to myself, “I have got a lot to do today,” but I quickly go over in my mind what I need to do for the whole day, and I zoom in to the respective tasks that needed to be done.

Be Organized

Map out your chores to be done, like into rooms, or floors (like my house is 3-storeys high), or by function. For example, if by function, I decide to do mopping, then I will mop my whole house altogether at one go. Usually that takes me about 45 minutes. Or I can go room by room. Doing the easier or smaller chores first will allow you to get those first senses of achievement faster and you will feel good with yourself quicker. More motivation for yourself! Yay!

Dangle a Carrot in front of Yourself!

We should promise a reward for ourselves once we have got our housework done. Like for me, I like to think that once I have finished what I need to do for the day, like in the evenings, then I have all the time to enjoy what I love doing….using the computer to go to my fengshui forum, and now now blogging. Or, like today, my husband promised to take me out to some good kopitiam (cafe in “Hokkien”) for a yummy cup of coffee and toast, wow, I worked at super speed, and finished my work in half the usual time! Voila!

Mindfulness/Paying attention

Being mindful means paying lots of attention into what you are doing. For example, you are sweeping or vacuuming the floor………concentrate with your senses and see, feel, hear what is happening when you are doing that task. Feel how your arm swings, see those dirt being swept away, see those grooves being left in the carpet by the vacuum cleaner, see the gleam in those dishes as you rinse away the soap.

Now, by applying mindfulness, you achieve 2 things – you are not feeling the dreariness of the chore at hand and what a better feeling than to see order coming out of chaos. Clutter is removed and organised, the pile of laundry in the basket is been folded neatly. The dirty dishes in the sink being washed and stacked neatly. You will feel good when you SEE what you are doing.

This is all I can think for the moment, when I have more tips to follow when the going gets tough for us….I will write a Part 2 for this.
