Good evening, dear friends 😀
For the past week, the weather has been extra hot, humid and stifling…….to such an extent that we often feel drained of energy and cranky. I thought I was the only one feeling like this but to my surprise, a few of my friends have mentioned the same effects to me. So, I have not been really cleaning and cooking (the mere thought of standing in front of the hot stove makes me sweat even more!) and the dishes that I cooked were the slow-cooker types, to minimise cooking on the stove.
So, yesterday, I really had to mop my whole house and wash the bathrooms, but I needed some heavy-duty motivation to get me going. What I did in desperate times like this was to put on my “80’s Disco Fever” music album, turn up the volume and grab my barang-barang (mops, brooms, pails) and start cleaning !! 😆 In a few minutes, my mood was uplifted and even my kids who were stting at the table having their lunch were bobbing their heads in tune to the music……yes! The mood is infectious!! There were songs like “Get Down On It” (yeah, down to my housework! 🙄), “Ma Baker”, “Disco Inferno,” “YMCA” etc. My hubby was rolling his eyes and shaking his head at me, but hey, anything as long as it gets me going!! 😆
Only problem was, I was soooo happy listening to my retro disco musix that I got overzealous and did too much at one time that I had sprained my lower back badly, with all that energetic mopping!! 😆 So, for today…I was just being a couch potato and watched TV the whole day because the medication that I took (muscle relaxants and antiflammatory painkillers) made me so drowsy and felt like I was in the “Twilight Zone.” For dinner, we just walked down the road to a coffee shop and had Indian food, since I didn’t cook. 😀
In times like this when I am not in top form, there are some steps that I take –
Call in the troops!
When I get overwhelmed by it all, then I would ask my kids to help out by just simply telling them that I am tired or not feeling well, and they would gladly lend a hand. With four kids, delegating the duties to them would be a breeze!
It is okay to have takeouts or eat out once in a while, as this will free up some time to do other more necessary.
Have more rest time in between work
Rather than zooming in non-stop into our tasks (like what I did yesterday), take a few short breaks and sip your coffee or tea. Yesterday, I drank Chinese Pu Erh tea which was very refreshing and kept me going……….and with the disco fever…..I went overboard!! 😆
Stroke Your Pets
If you have a pet, a dog or a cat, it would help you to destress a bit and take a respite from your chores. Give your mind a break from the tedious chores. I stopped for a while and hug my cat and kept stroking her head. You will be amazed how good you feel when you do that!
Dangle more carrots in front of you!
Hahaha! This is my favourite one – I would promise myself things that I would reward myself with – usually, just resting in my favourite armchair with a cup of tea with my feet up and watching my favourite show on TV would do the trick! 😉 My favourite shows on TV are usually the Discovery channels for Home & Living, Health, Travel and Living. But when the going is really tough, I will dream of all the things that I want to do after I’m done with the chores. 😉
Smile and keep smiling
When I am listening to the upbeat disco music, I would be humming away to the tune, tapping my feet away and in between, I would be smiling and smiling away because I was enjoying the music and the tediousness of the chores has taken a back seat. Not so boring and that has also brought a smile to my face. Sort of like…aha! I am in control of the chores and not the chores over me! 🙄
Well, hope these funny tips of mine will help you, too!
Happy cleaning! 😆
Much energy and joy,
