Hi there, dear friends πŸ˜€

My husband’s nephew passed away from haemorrhagic dengue fever many years ago and I am always really worried about any of my family members contracting dengue fever. With the increasing rainy spells in our tropical country, recent news about the rise in dengue fever cases only got me more concerned Β  ===>

Aedes albopictus mosquito

Aedes albopictus mosquito

1)Β Rapid increase in dengue fever cases raises alarm in Malaysia – The Star

2) Singapore on alert after dengue fever cases rise – The Independent

3) Sharp rise in dengue fever cases – The Star

Because my house is near a forest reserve and a park, the mosquito count can be higher than in other urban areas. Aedes mosquitoes like to come out from hiding to bite during dusk and dawn – Β their hiding places being anywhere shady outside, or anywhere dark in our house, e.g. behind cabinets, under beds, etc.Β

My husband and children had often complained of mosquitoes biting them when they went to bed and the Β lights were turned off. .

We don’t have mosquito screen netting at our windows and doors because we like to have the free flowing breeze coming into our house. Although we have used electric mosquito coils/mats and even mosquito sprays to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, I was not happy that they were chemical in nature and I was also worried about the unknown chemical impact on my children’s health. Β In addition, the mosquito coils and sprays do cost quite a bit.Β

When I stumbled onto this online health supplement storeΒ Β a couple of months ago, I was very happy to find that website selling pure and genuine essential oils at very economical prices. Right away, I ordered a bottle of Now Foods Citronella Essential OilΒ at only USD3-18 each in addition to my other stuff to try and see how well the essential oil can repel mosquitoes πŸ’‘ .

I love the strong, sharp, musky and invigorating Citronella smell… and I love that its aromatherapy benefit also helps to make my house smell great – that, for me, was a wonderful bonus in addition to my using it for the main purpose to repel mosquitoes. Β I would drop a little citronella oil here and there, in all corners (especially dark areas) and near my sofa set Β in my three-storey house. Wow, that one little bottle of pure essential oil can sure go a long way! I still have a quarter bottle Β left now after 2 months of using it. Moreover, I didn’t have to use it every day and the mosquitoes stayed away! Β πŸ˜€Β

Anyway, it was only today that I asked all my children if there were still mosquitoes biting them in their respective rooms and in the study room (mosquitoes were often biting their legs earlier and distracting them)…and I was really surprised that they all told me that there is practically NO MORE MOSQUITOES around them these days!Β

Wow, I was really impressed with the effects of the Citronella Oil in repelling mosquitoes and that is why I am writing about it here to let you know that there is a really cheap, effective and most importantly, NATURAL way of making sure that there are no mosquitoes near you and your loved ones.Β

We can now sleep better with no Β mosquitoes biting us anymore, and I am really relieved that I now have a good, natural, and refreshing way of making sure that the chances of those dangerous Aedes mosquitoes coming into my house are minimised!Β

Hope you will be able to find some pure Citronella Essential Oil to try. It will be especially good and safe for babies and young children, compared to the other chemical mosquito coils/mats.Β

With best wishes,

choesf πŸ˜€Β

Some tips on using the Citronella Essential Oil πŸ’‘ ===>

    1) make sure windows are open to allow the mosquitoes to fly out of your home after you have dropped some Citronella Oil

    2) areas to focus on – near the beds, sofa sets, dark corners (where mosquitoes hide during daytime

    3) apply Citronella Oil during the day or night (consider that sometimes the oil may be too overpowering to smell when used in the bedroom and you may have trouble sleeping.

I read that Citronella Oil can also repel other bugs, ticks and fleas πŸ’‘ …. so, I am wondering if I can just put one drop on my dog, but I worry that it smell may be to strong for him due to a dog’s enhanced sense of smell.

*** Another tip for avoiding bed bugs from coming to your bedding πŸ’‘ ===> drop some Lavender Oil over the mattress after vacuuming it. The soothing smell will also be relaxing! πŸ˜€

You are most welcome, dear Hui Hui πŸ˜€

If you are getting Citronella Oil, remember to get some Lavender Oil, too – Lavender Oil is good for repelling bed bugs, too – sprinkle some onto your mattresses every time you change the bed sheets (if possible, vacuum the mattress surface before applying Lavender Oil). Can be relaxing for everyone, too! πŸ˜‰

I just received my 5th order from iherb today – some amazing products which I will write about shortly – they helped a lot with my perimenopause symptoms and I have been looking to buy them in Malaysia for the past few years but couldn’t. πŸ˜€

I got some Stevia Extract Sweetener (sugar substitute) for my husband who is a diabetic. Each 60ml bottle only costs USD3-95.

      http://www.iherb.com/Now-Foods-Better-Stevia-Specials

My children love the Nestle Hot Chocolate With Mini Marshmallows there – very tasty and cheap at just USD1-50 per box (6 satchets).

While at iherb, be sure to check out the “Freebies” page – at one time, they were giving out for free either a bottle of Dr Best CoEnzyme Q10 with any purchases. I always order their RX Omega Pharmaceutical Fish Oil with free bottle of CoEnzyme Q10. πŸ’‘

Do have a lovely weekend ahead!

      Hi there, dear SKY πŸ˜€

The lemon grass is in the same family as the citronella plant…hence the similar lemony smell. I’m sorry you didn’t like the citronella smell 😳 but for me, I quite like its refreshing aroma, so I don’t really know what is that cockroach smell. It is much stronger than lemon grass. Yes, you can use both together if you like. πŸ˜‰

Hi there, dear Mdm Jaime πŸ˜€

I bought mine online from http://www.iherb.com in the US. It is pure Citronella essential oil.
A few weeks ago, 3 households just a few doors away from my house got dengue fever – about 10 people in total.

I am looking for high dosage of pine bark extract and also very good silymarin extract. Can’t find anything good in malaysia. Since you have access to iherb, can you get it for me and I pay you for it? Ah, not forgetting melatonin as well.

        Many thanks

        Hi there, dear starck πŸ˜€

Yes, it is quite hard to find very good quality health supplements at affordable prices here in Malaysia and iherb is the place to conveniently get them.

I am just another customer at iherb buying the products there for my family’s personal use. You can also easily join as a member there and buy online for yourself with your credit or debit card. It is really easy to register there. Just use the Gift Coupon Code MLL655 to get US$10 off purchases exceeding US$40 for first time buyers there.

All you need to do is just click on the “Shopping Cart” icon at the iherb products you wish to buy and when you are ready to check out and pay – click on the top right hand corner to do so…you will be guided to fill in your personal details, shipping address and credit/debit card number.

At the subtotal section of the checkout of order page, there is a box that you can insert the Gift Coupon Code MLL655 to get your discount of US$10.

For quick shipping to Malaysia – select the “DHL Express-International” – the shipping will costs around US$10 only depending on the weight of your products. The maximum I paid at one time was only US$15 for a 5-kg box of organic shampoos and conditioners. Shipping will take only 5 days and the DHL forwarding agent will handle everything necessary and documentation with the Malaysian Customs.

Don’t choose the cheaper airmail postal shipping although it is cheaper by a few ringgit – the package may get “lost” and don’t arrive (if you know what I “mean” with the postal delivery here).

To get Malaysian Customs Clearance (i.e. reducing the chances of your purchases from being confiscated or taxed by the Customs), make sure your order shipment each time does not exceed RM500 and limit the number of each product to 2 units only. This way, they will allow your online orders as being for personal consumption/use. πŸ’‘

I have deleted your email address here to avoid spambots from hitting your email.

        Do have a lovely weekend!

        With best wishes,

        choesf πŸ˜€

P.S. When you have an account at iherb already, you can give your own account number to your friends and relatives so that they can get US$10 off their first purchases exceeding US$40. In the last 10 months or so, I have ordered more than 15 times from iherb – Hawaiian Spirulina, Organic Rooibos Tea, CoQ10, Gingki Biloba, Multi-vites, Fish Oil, Stem Cell Beauty Care, Organic Whole Coffee Beans for my husband’s espresso machine, organic Chinese Green & White Teas…and many more. πŸ’‘

Also, be sure to check out the “Trials” page as you can get many products at trial prices which are really low…e.g. 30 capsules of Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil for only US$1-95

      Hi there, angela πŸ˜€

I bought mine from iherb – click on the picture and it will bring you to that site. Unfortunately, the price of the Citronella Oil has gone up to US$3-81 and due to my depreciated Ringgit, I can’t get it for RM10 anymore. 😦

Remember to use my Coupon Code MLL655 at the Checkout Page to get some 25% discounts as a first time customer there. Their organic products are really good – I use their shampoos, conditioners and facial care. Some people love to buy organic baby stuff, too. CoEnzyme Q10 and Omega-3 Fish Oil there are really cheap, too!

      Have fun shopping!

      Hi there, Eunicemummy πŸ˜€

At first, I dropped the citronella oil on the floor in the dark corners but I noticed the oils left a stain on the floor that can be removed only with hard scrubbing. So, I now drop the oil onto fabric like curtains, blankets, corners of my fabric sofa set, floor mats, etc. But your small saucer idea is a good tip as well.

I have tried adding citronella to water and sprayed all over the room, but the smell is not strong enough to deter the mosquitoes.

      Hi there, James πŸ˜€

You are right, essential oils must be diluted before applying on our skin.

But, I don’t apply the citronella oil on my body. I place a few drops all over my house to repel the mosquitoes.

I read that essential oil need to be diluted with other oil before applying on to the skin, so for citronella oil do we need to dilute them? If yes, can we dilute with Johnson baby oil?
    Thank you
